Photographs, along with films, have played a decisive role in shaping
our historical consciousness of the past fifty years. Even when we have
not experienced historical events for ourselves they seem to be familiar
as a result of media dissemination. Further, photographs are evidence
of the witnessing of an event. During the Cold War they were used all
too often for propaganda purposes.
The Photo Chronicle consists of 205 images recalling significant incidents
and crosspoints relative to German/German and Russian history - bearing
in mind that experiences and thus the memories of them differ. Therefore
the representations of events by photographers are diverse. The thematically
organised selection concentrates - chronologically - on the comparative
view. It places, at times on purpose, political points of view of divergent
motivation side by side and brings photographs which “made history” and
which form the image-memory up to the present day alongside previously
little known material.
For technical reasons no vintage prints are on exhibition - the photographs
on display are either new prints, reproduction or digital prints.
